Securing the load: always

The load must be arranged so that it cannot slide, tip or fall: strapped down, wedged or held by nets.

Under emergency braking, objects multiply their weight: a 20 kg box strikes with the force of several hundred. Put heavy items low down and towards the front, and stack nothing above the backrest.

Dimensions and overhangs

Basic dimensions for vehicle and load: at most 2.55 m wide and 4 m high.

• To the rear the load may extend up to 5 m measured from the centre of the rear axle.
• To the front up to 3 m from the centre of the front axle.
• A rear overhang of more than 1 m must be marked: a clearly visible flag or board, and at night a light and a reflector.

Roof load and bike carriers

The maximum roof load is given in the vehicle documents – and the roof rack counts together with the load.

Note: a higher centre of gravity makes the car noticeably more sensitive in bends and to crosswinds. With a rear bike carrier, check that the lights and the number plate remain visible.

Snow chains

The sign «snow chains compulsory» applies to all cars: chains on at least two driven wheels.

Drive slowly, in the order of 50 km/h at most, following the manufacturer's instructions. Remove them as soon as the road is clear. Four-wheel drive is no exemption from the requirement.

Motorcycle: helmet and equipment

On a motorcycle the helmet requirement applies: approved and properly fastened.

Gloves, a jacket with protectors, trousers and sturdy footwear are also strongly recommended. In a fall, clothing is the only thing between skin and asphalt.
