You are always the one responsible

Legally the position is clear: the person at the wheel remains responsible, whatever systems the vehicle carries.

As long as you must monitor or be able to take back control, the responsibility is yours. The vehicle executes – the person answers.

What does readiness to take over mean?

The most delicate moment is the handover: from the system back to you.

Being ready means: properly seated, hands available, eyes on the road and situational awareness maintained. Sleeping, leaving the driving position or becoming absorbed in your phone is incompatible with that.

The trap: over-trust and inattention

The more reliable a system appears, the more attention drops – monotony makes you passive.

Typical signs: no longer checking the mirrors, reacting late to warnings, turning to other things «because the car is doing it anyway». This is a documented effect, not a matter of personal discipline.

When you must intervene immediately

• When the system issues a takeover request (audible signal, display, steering wheel vibration).
• When road markings are missing or there are roadworks.
• In poor weather that limits the sensors.
• Facing unusual situations: an accident, animals, emergency vehicles.
• Whenever something does not match what you expected – doubt is enough.

Opportunities and risks: the conclusion

Used well, assistance and automation systems make traffic safer: they never tire and they react faster than a person.

The risk is not technical but human: it appears when they are trusted beyond what they can do. Automation does not remove responsibility, it merely shifts the moment at which it is exercised.
